Dolet® for Sibelius History

Changes 8.2 to 8.3 (January 2023)

Version 8.3 adds the following new features when used with Sibelius 2022.12 and later:

  • Dotted and thick barlines are now exported.
  • The “Wings on repeat barlines” engraving rule is now used while exporting repeats.

Changes 8.1 to 8.2 (December 2022)

Version 8.2 is now released under the MIT open source license, rather than the more restrictive license used in previous versions. It also includes the following new features and fixes:

  • Figured bass is now exported. However, figured bass that changes under a note and figured bass extensions are not yet exported.
  • Text tracking is now exported.
  • The percussion clef glyph is now exported.
  • The octave-down treble clef glyph is now exported if it differs from the commonly used treble clef with an 8 below.
  • Changes to octave-transposing clefs now take the instrument transposition into account when exported.
  • Exporting the end points of ties that start on tuplets has been improved.
  • Exporting the end points of cross-staff slurs and glissandos has been improved.
  • Exporting flat symbols in part names has been improved.
  • Exporting text that changes to a music text font midway through has been improved.
  • TAB clefs no longer export a line element.

Changes 8.0 to 8.1 (May 2022)

Version 8.1 includes the following new features and fixes:

  • Headers and footers are now exported. As with other page-aligned text, positions are based on common default house styles since plug-ins cannot access text style definitions.
  • The page number wildcard is now exported. (Regular Sibelius page numbers are still not exported due to ManuScript limitations.)
  • The year of composition wildcard is now exported.
  • The dynamic markings ffp, ffmp, fmp, fpp, msfz, and msfzp are now exported as dynamics.
  • Standalone symbols for notes, noteheads, rests, augmentation dots, bar repeats, barlines, clefs, flags, and octaves are now exported.
  • The Sibelius formatting string for turning off a music text font while retaining other aspects of string formatting is now exported.
  • Page-aligned text with a repeated mix of words and dynamic symbols no longer exports with invalid MusicXML that other applications cannot open.

First Dolet 8 for Sibelius release 8.0 (January 2022)

Dolet 8 for Sibelius adds MusicXML 4.0 support, including MusicXML 3.1 features that were not available in Dolet 6 for Sibelius. This includes the following new features:

  • Export and batch export use the .musicxml file extension instead of the .xml file extension.
  • Concert scores now export transposition information, including alternate clefs for transposed parts.
  • Many more standard symbols are now exported.
  • Musical symbols in a music text font that are mixed together with text are now exported.
  • The n, sfzp, and pf dynamics are now exported.
  • Repeated measure numbers are now exported correctly.
  • L.V. ties now export as MusicXML let-ring ties, whether entered as native Sibelius L.V. ties or using L.V. symbols.
  • Buzz rolls are now exported more accurately.
  • System directions exports with the system attribute, providing better results when creating parts from an imported score.
  • Flats in part name credits now export with a flat symbol rather than a lowercase b.

Version 8.0 adds support for ManuScript changes made to Sibelius over the past five years. This includes the following new features:

  • Cross-staff notation is exported starting with Sibelius 2021.9.
  • Scores with annotation items are now exported correctly.
  • Batch export always exports the score, no matter what part was open when the file was last saved.
  • Batch export no longer prompts for saving after each file.
  • Files are now exported in sorted order during batch export on Mac.
  • Tied Into ties and tie line styles added in Sibelius 2020.1 are now exported.
  • Initial font families for text now export for text without font family changes.
  • Initial font sizes now export for text without font size changes.
  • The default words font is now exported more accurately.
  • The version number is exported correctly from the new numbering systems introduced in Sibelius 2018 and Sibelius 2020.

Version 8.0 also includes the following features and fixes:

  • MusicXML files for each dynamic part can be exported all at once using the new Export Parts to MusicXML menu item.
  • Page-aligned text is now exported except for headers and footers. Positions are based on common default house styles, since plug-ins cannot access text style definitions.
  • Text that mixes dynamics with words now exports correctly.
  • Grace notes are now exported with correct beaming.
  • Hidden accidentals now export correctly.
  • Metronome marks with numeric ranges now export correctly.
  • Concert scores with octave-transposing parts such as guitar and piccolo now export correctly.
  • Expressions are now exported as italic text unless overridden in a specific case.
  • Text repeats are now exported as bold text unless overridden in a specific case.
  • Text repeats at the end of a bar are now exported as right-justified.
  • Font size changes within text are now exported.
  • The part name, opus number, and composer dates wildcards are now exported.
  • Plain system text, musical structure text, and timecode text are now exported.
  • Text on blank pages at the end of a score is now exported.
  • Direction placement is now exported for directions that are clearly above or below a staff.
  • The xml:space attribute is now exported for text that contains line breaks.
  • Text preceding metronome marks is now exported more accurately.
  • Metronome marks followed by text are now exported correctly.
  • Text repeats now export with playback in cases with simple repeat structures.
  • Fingerings on notes following grace notes are exported more accurately.
  • Multi-line fingerings are now exported as fingerings rather than text.
  • Hidden time signatures are now exported as hidden.
  • Additive time signatures are now exported.
  • Duplicate slurs starting on single notes are no longer exported.
  • Dynamics mfp and sffzpp are now exported as dynamics rather than text.
  • Dynamics in the Maestro font are now exported correctly.
  • More symbols are exported from Sibelius chord fonts, including the different ALT symbols.
  • Parts that have an ossia staff and octave-transposing clefs now export correctly.
  • Slurs on beamed grace notes at the end of a measure now export correctly.
  • Metronome tempo playback is now exported from ranges like 100-120, using the midpoint of the tempo range.
  • The MusicXML group is now exported, indicating whether a file is a score or a part.
  • Instruments defined with an A# transposition now export the key signature correctly.
  • Export no longer hangs in some rare cases with complex tuplets.

Version 8.0 removes support for versions older than Sibelius Ultimate 2019.5.


Dolet 6 for Sibelius History

Changes 6.5 to 6.6 (March 2016)

Version 6.6 exports files much faster than previous versions. On Mac it can export 50% faster. On Windows, export can be 5 to 10 times faster, with more improvement for larger files. Version 6.6 also adds a manual installation option for Windows 32-bit systems.

Changes 6.4 to 6.5 (November 2015)

Version 6.5 adds support for Sibelius 8 in the Dolet for Sibelius installers and improves support for 64-bit Sibelius 7 and 8 in the Windows installer.

Changes 6.3 to 6.4 (September 2014)

Version 6.4 adds support for Sibelius 7.5, including export of gaps before measures.

Changes 6.2 to 6.3 (November 2013)

Version 6.3 improves the export of open key / atonal scores for better compatibility with Finale 2014. It also adds full accidental export from Sibelius 7.1.3. It also fixes the following issues:

  • Accidentals were sometimes exported incorrectly from transposed music.
  • Export of staff layout processing instructions for extra space could create invalid MusicXML files.

Changes 6.1 to 6.2 (July 2012)

Version 6.2 fixes the following issues:

  • Notes with a whole note duration or longer no longer export with a stem element.
  • User-defined system text now exports from Sibelius 7.1 and 7.1.2 as it does in Sibelius 7.0 and earlier.
  • Spurious bar rests associated with the system staff are no longer exported.

Changes 6.0 to 6.1 (November 2011)

Version 6.1 is now available free of charge. No serial number is required. Version 6.1 also adds the following feature:

  •  Lyric elision undertie and hard space characters are now exported.

First Dolet 6 for Sibelius release 6.0 (August 2011)

Dolet 6 for Sibelius adds support for MusicXML 3.0, including the following features:

  • Instrument sound IDs
  • Percussion symbols
  • String mute symbols
  • Enhanced ornaments, including slashed turns and mordent approaches / releases
  • Woodwind hole symbols
  • Explicit export of bar rests
  • Exporting what types of information a credit element contains (e.g. title, subtitle, composer)
  • Better export of major-minor chord symbols
  • New notehead shapes (fa up, ping)
  • 512th and 1024th notes

Other new features include:

  • Sibelius 7 support, including export of stem directions.
  • Export of hidden tempo marks in text that follows a tilde sign.
  • Export of standard l.v. symbols.
  • Correct export of repeat lines that start at the end of the previous measure, or end at the start of the next measure.
  • Better export of user-defined lyric text styles.
  • Better export of user-defined repeat lines with styles created in later versions of Sibelius.
  • Better export of user-defined metronome marks with styles created in later versions of Sibelius.
  • Better export of standard fermata symbols.
  • Better export of two- and four-bar repeats.
  • Export a time-only attribute for metronome marks that play on only one pass.
  • Brace characters { and } are exported correctly from music text fonts.
  • Full export of tuplets where Sibelius’s inner data structures have a discrepancy as to where the tuplet ends.
  • Instrument change text hidden with a tilde character is not exported.
  • Better export of empty measure numbers.
  • Better export of special barlines.
  • Export a processing instruction when there is a large within-voice backup, indicating a possible Sibelius file data issue.
  • Windows installer user interface is now localized for all Sibelius 6 languages.

Dolet 5 for Sibelius History

Changes 5.3 to 5.4 (August 2010)

  • Hook beams are exported more accurately when in the middle of a group of beamed notes.
  • Begin and continue beams are no longer exported incorrectly when the following note is a quarter note or longer.
  • Invisible text starting with a tilde is no longer exported in instrument names and credits.

Changes 5.2 to 5.3 (May 2010)

  • Improves the export of lyric hyphenation when lyrics have been imported from MIDI or PhotoScore files.

Changes 5.1 to 5.2 (January 2010)

  • Adds support for Sibelius’s Focus on Staves feature when used with Sibelius 6.

Changes 5.0 to 5.1 (October 2009)

Version 5.1 adds support for Sibelius 6.1. Sibelius 6.1 adds ManuScript support for many new features, including document setup and selected engraving rules.

The following new features are exported when using Dolet 5.1 for Sibelius with Sibelius 6.1:

  • Score groupings, including braces, brackets, and group barlines
  • Default page and system margins
  • Default music and text fonts
  • Default distances between staves and between systems
  • Small staves
  • Horizontal positions for the ends of lines
  • System text and lines are now exported on all staves set in the current house style
  • Line widths for staves, stems, barlines, beams, leger lines, slurs, and ties
  • Scaling factors for grace and cue notes
  • Key signature cancellation according to the current house style
  • The options for instruments to display a full name, short name, or no name
  • The option for an instrument not to display a key signature
  • Sub-bass clef
  • Improved chord symbol formatting

Version 5.1 also adds the following improvements for both Sibelius 5 and 6:

  • Accidentals in instrument names and abbreviations are exported more accurately.
  • Boxed system text is exported.

First Dolet 5 for Sibelius release 5.0 (July 2009)

Dolet 5 for Sibelius writes MusicXML 2.0 files and works with Sibelius 5.1 and later. Dolet 5 for Sibelius adds many new features compared to the Dolet 4 for Sibelius plug-in.

The Dolet 5 for Sibelius plug-in exports many new features for Sibelius 6 users, thanks to improvements in the Sibelius 6 plug-in interface:

  • Transpositions
  • Octave-transposing clefs anywhere in a score
  • Hidden staves on systems
  • System and page breaks are exported even without the layout being locked first
  • Fermatas over bar rests
  • Color of notes and other bar objects
  • Buzz roll “z” that appears on a stem
  • MusicXML encoding date

New notation features in Sibelius 6 are also exported, including:

  • Jazz articulations
  • Comments
  • Feathered beams
  • Note-attached arpeggios
  • Greater accuracy in exporting Sibelius 6 chord symbols
  • Export of chord symbols in German, Solfege, and Scandinavian styles

Dolet 5 for Sibelius has also made many additions and improvements in MusicXML export for both Sibelius 5 and Sibelius 6 users compared to Dolet 4 for Sibelius:

  • Subtitles and dedications are exported.
  • Standard Sibelius arrow and bracket lines are exported.
  • Octave-transposing clefs are exported at the start of a score.
  • Standard Sibelius pedal lines are exported with correct formatting.
  • Standard Sibelius accidental mark symbols are exported.
  • Standard Sibelius non-arpeggiate lines are exported.
  • Standard Sibelius notehead styles 24 through 29 are exported.
  • Hidden tuplets are exported with correct formatting.
  • Slides between notes in tuplets are exported.
  • Tab staves export a staff-size set to Sibelius’s default size.
  • Vertical positions on tab staves are exported more accurately.
  • Symbols are exported by name if not recognized as a MusicXML element.
  • System symbols are exported more accurately.
  • Fermata symbols are exported more accurately.
  • Beat noteheads on half notes and longer export a diamond notehead instead of a slash.
  • Text wildcards are exported more accurately.
  • Instrument changes are exported using MusicXML instruments.

Dolet 4 for Sibelius History

Changes 4.1 to 4.2 (May 2009)

  • Sibelius 6 is now supported.
  • Export of double-note tremolos is now more reliable.
  • Cue-size noteheads within a normal size chord are now exported.

Changes 4.0 to 4.1 (December 2008)

  • Cue-size text, chord, and line objects no longer cause the exported MusicXML file to be invalid.
  • More versions of the b9b13 chord symbol are now exported.
  • Dolet 4 for Sibelius now reports when Sibelius 5 encounters a rare problem in writing out some lines of a MusicXML file, including the lines that are missing from the file. This is caused by a problem in Sibelius 5, and we have been advised that reporting the problem is the best that plug-ins can currently do in this situation.

First Dolet 4 for Sibelius release 4.0 (September 2008)

Dolet 4 for Sibelius writes MusicXML 2.0 files and works with Sibelius 5. Dolet 4 for Sibelius adds many new features thanks to improvements in the MusicXML 2.0 language and the Sibelius 5 plug-in interface. Dolet 4 for Sibelius now exports the following features that were not exported in the Dolet 3 for Sibelius plug-in:

  • Chord symbol diagrams (requires Sibelius 5.2)
  • Guitar tablature staff tuning
  • Double-note tremolos
  • Sibelius’s built-in metric modulations, including swing tempo indications
  • Cue-size notes
  • Multirests
  • Blank pages
  • Text on an initial blank title page
  • Measure numbers
  • Cautionary accidentals
  • Line breaks in text
  • Non-automatic tuplet formatting, such as brackets being forced to display or forced to be hidden

Dolet 3 for Sibelius History

Changes 3.5 to 3.6 (June 2008)

  • Triple- and quadruple-dotted whole notes are now exported correctly.
  • Cue notes and backup elements are no longer exported with a duration of 0.

Changes 3.4 to 3.5 (August 2007)

  • Fixes some translation problems when running the plug-in in German versions of Sibelius.

Changes 3.3 to 3.4 (June 2007)

  • Sibelius 5 is now supported. Grace note types (eighth, sixteenth, etc.) are now exported from Sibelius 5. MIDI program and channel data exported from Sibelius 4 is not exported from Sibelius 5.

Changes 3.2 to 3.3 (December 2006)

  • Wedge articulations are now correctly supported using the MusicXML spiccato element. A parallel change in Dolet 3.5 for Finale allows these articulations to be translated correctly from Sibelius to Finale.

Changes 3.1 to 3.2 (September 2006)

  • Lyrics created when importing standard MIDI files are now exported.
  • Incomplete metronome marks no longer keep export from working.

Changes 3.0.2 to 3.1 (August 2006)

  • Live Playback data is now exported.
  • Lyrics with user-defined styles are exported more accurately.
  • The MusicXML file now tells other programs that accidentals are not included, so they can generate them automatically.

Changes 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 (June 2006)

  • C0 control characters in dynamics are no longer exported incorrectly to MusicXML files. This was keeping those files from importing into other programs.

Changes 3.0 to 3.0.1 (March 2006)

  • Dolet 3 for Sibelius now has a German user interface when run from the German version of Sibelius 4.
  • Coda and segno symbols now export more accurately.
  • Tuplets preceded by a grace note now export more accurately.

First Dolet 3 for Sibelius release 3.0 (December 2005)

Dolet 3 for Sibelius writes MusicXML 1.1 files and works with Sibelius 4. It has many new and improved features compared to Dolet 1 for Sibelius.

The new features include export of:

  • Built-in articulations
  • Built-in symbols like coda and segno signs
  • Rehearsal marks
  • Glissandos
  • System and page breaks
  • Common and cut time symbols
  • Single-note tremolos
  • MIDI channels and programs

Dolet 1 for Sibelius History

Changes 1.7 to 1.8 (November 2011)

  • Version 1.8 is now distributed free of charge. If you are using Sibelius 5.1 or later, you will get better results using the Dolet 6 for Sibelius plug-in, also distributed free of charge.

Changes 1.6 to 1.7 (October 2009)

  • Sibelius 6.1 is now supported.
  • The sub-bass clef added in Sibelius 6.1 is now exported.

  • Sibelius 6 is now supported.

Changes 1.4 to 1.5 (June 2008)

  • Quotation marks, score info, dynamics, and hidden text are exported more accurately.
  • Export now works for scores that contain highlights.
  • The start of ties now has a tied element in the MusicXML file in addition to a tie element.
  • The MusicXML files now indicate that transposition is not supported.

Changes 1.1 to 1.2 (August 2004)

  • The export dialog box is now wider, so that file names can be read more easily on Windows XP systems.
  • Open key signatures are now exported correctly.
  • C0 control characters in Sibelius text are no longer exported incorrectly to the MusicXML file.
  • Percussion clef export now fully matches the MusicXML 1.0 definition.
  • Lyrics for verse 3 and above are exported more accurately.

Changes 1.02 to 1.1 (January 2004)

  • MusicXML 1.0 is now supported.
  • Positioning for lines, text, and notes is now exported.
  • Tuplet export is improved.
  • Instruments that have two staves for regular notation and tablature now export correctly.

  • Sibelius 3 is now supported. Sibelius 3.1 is the first supported version of Sibelius 3 on Windows.
